Experience the Traditional World of the Geisha Make-up and hair
Kyoto's famed Geisha teahouses have historically been closed to all but those with regular connections, or those introduced through certain private channels.
Thus, the public in general, and foreign visitors in particular, rarely have had the opportunity to enjoy the artistic performances of Geisha. Strictly translated, the word Geisha means person of art, and Geisha are indeed finely schooled in such traditional arts as classical dancing, the playing of musical instruments and other performance arts.
The Festival of Japan can now offer an unique opportunity of spending this exciting and informative seminar with a retired geisha from Kyoto. Here, you will not only be welcomed into a world of traditional Japan rarely seen by outsiders.
Learn the intricate skills of applying the traditional shiro nori, the white make-up associated only with these amazing artists. All course materials, literature and practise make-up are included in the cost of the course. Those wanting to, can order supplies of the authentic shiro nori make-up and benefit from group discounts.
An interpreteur will be on hand throughout the seminar to answer questions put directly to the Geisha. The course will cover:
- The history of the geisha make-up
- · Correct cleansing of the face, neck and hands
- Applying a wax base to aid smooth, long lasting application
- Variations on the make-up from apprentice geisha (maiko) to proffessional geisha
- Advice on hair styles
- Wearing a katsura (wig)
- Advice on correct use of hair ornamentation
- This course will also be useful for those wishing to offer kabuki style make-up.
